Do You Not Know?

Do You Not Know?

“Do you not know?”

This question can be intriguing because, when it is asked without context, our minds immediately begin to wonder what the subject is. We may assume it has something to do with a transaction buying, selling, or rendering a service. But when the Apostle Paul asks this question, he is pointing us to something else: our identity, our bodies, and the One to whom we belong.

Paul writes:

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”
1 Corinthians 6:19–20

The human body was created by God as the earthly vessel through which we live and interact with the world. For the believer, it is also described as a temple of the Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul emphasized on this when he addressed the Corinthian church concerning sexual immorality.

His message to the Corinthians is still relevant to us today.

Many at time people live as though grace gives us the freedom to do whatever we want. We say, “God understands. His grace covers everything.” But Paul asks us a confronting question:

“Do you not know?”

Have we forgotten who we are?

Sexual immorality has become increasingly normalized in our world. Many people have been made to believe that the more your sexual experiences, the better you are to keep man. Sexual Purity is now portrayed as old-fashioned, restrictive, or unrealistic.

But Paul asks, “Do you not know?”

So I ask: Was man created for sex, or was sex created to serve the purposes of God within the boundaries He established?

We must not continue in immorality when Christ is calling us to purity?

Purity is not merely physical. It begins in the mind, continues in the heart, and is expressed through our actions.

Some people may claim to be physically pure, but sometimes the only reason they have not fallen into certain sins is because the opportunity has not yet presented itself. True purity goes beyond the absence of opportunity. It is a decision of the heart to honour God at all cost.

Do you not know that your body is a habitation of the Holy Spirit?

You were bought with a price—the price was the blood of Christ.

Just pause and think about that for a moment.

Your body is not merely yours to use however you please. Your life belongs to God. Your body belongs to him.Your mind belongs to Him. Your sexuality belongs to Him. And every instruction God gives concerning our lives is ultimately for our good.

When we engage in sexual immorality, we do not merely dishonour God; we also dishonour our own bodies.

We see Apostle Paul going on to explain that our bodies are members of Christ. Therefore, we must be careful about what we unite ourselves with. The one who joins himself to a prostitute becomes one with her, while the one who is joined to the Lord is one with Him in spirit.

This is why we must strive to live sexually pure lives—in mind, thought, and action.

It time to desist from sexually perverse behaviour, be intentional about what we expose our minds to like porn.

Pornography does more than provide temporary pleasure. It can condition the mind to desire and normalize what God calls us to reject. It can whisper, “Take it. You don't have to wait. You don't have to exercise self-control. You can have it now.”

But we often fail to recognize that some of the struggles we experience today may be connected to things we permitted into our lives in the past.

Every interaction leaves an imprint. Some experiences can fragment the soul, distort our understanding of intimacy, or create doors through which destructive patterns enter our lives.

Did you not know that you are joint heirs with God.

And as an heir when the king ask to desist, He is not trying deprive you but preserve you.

Jesus did not die merely so that we could say we are saved while continuing to live according to the patterns of the world. He purchased us so that we could become His.

“You are not your own, for you were bought with a price.”

Therefore, we must ask ourselves:

What are we allowing to inhabit the space that belongs to God?

Can the same heart that houses the Holy Spirit continually make room for things that contradicts Him?

What is flowing from us?

What are we feeding our minds?

What are we entertaining in our thoughts?

What are we allowing our eyes to see?

What are we allowing our bodies to participate in?

And perhaps most importantly:

Do you not know?

Do you not know that you are God's temple?

Do you not know that you were bought with a price?

Do you not know Good is God's desire for you?

Do you not know that His boundaries are not meant to destroy your joy, but to protect it?

God is sending an invitation to you today telling you that it is time to let go pornography, of immoral behavior and come to him, He will help you.
